Roles & Responsibilities

Ian McLuskie has kindly produced a document that defines the roles and responsibilities of various positions within the society. Download it here (PDF) >>

Gentlemen, an honour and a pleasure to have been your Captain this last 12 months and I look forward to supporting LEGS in the years to come.

Thank you all so much for your charity which has been a truly humbling experience to be on the receiving end. The charity was chosen due to me having the grim job of carrying the coffin of a good friend, Jason, after he died suddenly of an aneurysm. The card received from his mother after she found out how much had been raised was a perfect example of how the LEGS philosophy of charity truly does affect people in positive ways and long may it continue.

Sadly, part of the AGM also saw Ken give an emotional speech in which he reluctantly withdrew himself as an active member of the LEGS golf society. A range of illnesses has finally caught up with him and swinging a golf club has now become a rather difficult and painful process. Indeed, that might also be said for a number of us other members, but perhaps not quite so literally as has befallen Ken. I've only been around a few years, but certainly even in that rather short time, Ken has shown himself to be one of the LEGS Legends and will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered and we would love to see him at a dinner or two if he is able.

Thank you all once again for your generosity.

Andy

Report

A fine end to the season at Bedford & County saw a victory for Mike Stockford who powered his way round in tricky conditions in an impressive 33 points. Recognition needs to be made of Ron's efforts as he came in as runner up with 31 points, but was unable to play 18 as a nasty road traffic accident on the 18th fairway resulted in a badly bruised shoulder. Good news that he is on the mind.

AGM so no fines, but Captain was delighted to give Colin Oates his Player of the Year trophy and also to recognise Andrew Stevenson's work throughout the year and award him the Calvados Cup - thank you, indeed, sir.

There will be more formal minutes posted shortly.

As Paul and Richard were the runners up with 31 points each and they had prizes for LD and NP, it was decided to auction the two bottles of wine for Captain's Charity (two bottles £40)

We only had 10 for dinner so it was  decided to fine everyone £10 and have a quick cross fine session to make up the extra bob or two (£10 to be exact)

Jeff paid tribute to Andrew's mother. Beryl, and thanked him for the kind donation in her memory - we all raised a glass - Tom Inskip could not stay for dinner but donated his meal cost to the charity and Paul was thanked for his help in arranging the day

We were, once again, lucky with the weather, with only the briefest of showers in the early afternoon - the course was in magnificent condition, but it was tricky with the ditch / stream coming into play on 8 of the holes (it seemed like more to me)- Paul said that he had specially prepared the super-fast greens which were even faster that the practice green but, even with his local knowledge, he could only come second!

We discussed starting times for B&C next month  - Mike is going to arrange for us to bring first tee time forward to 11.30 so that we can be back in daylight this year

Charity
Thank you all once again for a collection of £222 - amazing from such a small group. Wonderful!

We were blessed once again with a glorious day having been rained upon a few days previous. Course in good knick and a good turn out with 21 of us fighting for glory.

Nice that my guest, Neil, decided to turn up albeit he waited until the 3rd tee before he showed his face. Also to add that, despite missing the first two holes, he only missed out on the guest prize by one point.

Thank you Andrew and everyone once again for a magnificent total that headed north of £200..I'm truy grateful.

Help for Heroes
3rd September 2015

H4HIan and Pippa once again provided a great day for 44+ golfers at Mount Pleasant GC and raised north of £2000 for their charity. Congratulations guys and a pleasure to be part of it.

A number of LEGS members took part with varying results, but, a shining star of the day was a certain Mr. Jeffrey Lewis Wood who overcame his putting woes completely and utterly and "scraped" a respectable 46 points - with a blob to boot. A pleasure to watch, sir, and look forward to the next round!

A thank you to all who turned out for my Captain's Day this year at Knebworth. Once again the course didn't disappoint and neither did the weather. Thank you to my playing partners David Steele and Tom Inskip who proved to be most enjoyable company - David being, until then, a name that existed simply as an email address and never actually a physical being!

Today was a day that once again captured all that LEGS is about - the game of golf, a great social experience with banter-plenty with that special ingedient that raises money for a worthy cause. A pleasure to be involved.

Thank you also to George who was able to be with us - always a pleasure to see you, sir.

Charity
LEGS surpassed themselves this time with over £300 raised. Andrew, thank you for your help, and to all of you who contributed - those who couldn't make it and made a donation and our guests who were all game!. A fantastic result.

East Herts was a rather enjoyable addition to this year's venues list. Course was scoreable and not too long, but greens were rather fast on occasions as many will agree! Pin positions were testing at times, but dinner made up for those!
Hope everyone who attended enjoyed the day.

Andrew once again proved a formidable Finesmaster and single-handedly brought fear to the entire room as he seemed to be in his element in his role as judge, jury and executioner. Thank you to Jack Storey who wasn't able to stay for dinner, but donated the difference to the charity, to Mr.Lavansche for buying a bottle of Jeff's superb champagne, to Ivor, Howard & Henry who donated in their absence and to everyone else who donated generously for a £209 total.

Captain's Done It
14th June 2015
Olympic Triathlon, Windsor, June 14th 2015

Well, I managed to get round the course in one piece. Swim in the Thames rather murky and something of a bun-fight. Ride around Windsor and environs a tad windy and run simply a case of mind-over-matter and move one leg in front of the other every couple of seconds. Time 2hrs 48 - chuffed.

Thank you for all of you guys who generously donated - a great incentive to keep on going! Another £1000+ raised for BHF.

Mentmore
8th June 2015

Sad, but not surprised to learn that Mentmore has gone bust. Gates were locked and members sent an email the evening of Sunday 7th June to let them know. Article here >>

Malcolm Wynd

Malcolm has finished his round of chemo and is now going to undergo an operation to insert new stem cells into his system.  He remains positive and has huge support from his wife Julia.  Jenny Ralph plays some golf with Julia and has said she will pass on your best wishes on behalf of all LEGS members.

No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.

Ken McCarthy

Ken has an issue with his prostate and is likely to need an operation. However, despite the seriousness, Ken is extremely optimistic and chipper about life and is looking forward to possibly joining us at Knebworth on Captain's Day. We all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to greeting him on the first tee soon. Thanks to Alan for letting us know.

Dorrie Stockford

Thoughts are with Mike Stockford and his family after the death of his Mother, Dorothy who passed away the morning of April 16th. Thoughts & prayers, sir.

I'd like to see the fairways more narrow. Then everybody would have to play from the rough, not just me

Great day again blessed with fine, warm weather. Course in grand fetter and a credit to current Potters Bar Captain, Ray Beckman. Winner Colin now cut to 12 and Alan gets another shot back to take him up to 22. (Handicap rather than points next time).

Charity
Many many thanks to Andrew who stepped in as a late "Finesmaster" and seemed to relish his position with absolute gusto. Particularly noteworthy was Tom's fine for buying a club tie when it was not needed due to the warm weather. Inspired, and sums up the social and charitable focus of what LEGS is about. Albeit Tom may have something to say about that!

Thank you to all those who generously donated to reach another £200+ collection and for those who gave extra for my Triathlon efforts - appreciated and my total is £875.

Many many thanks to both Alan "Finesmaster" Horn and everyone, once again. A wonderful £211 was collected including the auction of a couple of Jeff's fine wines! Thank you Ivor for your donation from the Nearest the Pin prize, also to Ian who donated his green fee to the charity. Humbled.

Report

Beautiful weather and testing course conditions saw for a rather low scoring day with lots of scores coming in around the mid-20 range. Greens were beautiful, but fairly rapid and rather slopey so the charity benefited considerably from Finesmaster's "Did anybody 3 putt or 4 putt" fine. Lots of donations for swearing on the course as well.

Post-golf scran was delicious and the whole course, once again, was a credit to Mr. Secretary, our resident JOG member.

Many many thanks to Andrew Stevenson who clearly revelled in his position as finesmaster - I've never seen him smiling so much all day long! £208 was collected including the auction of a couple of Jeff's fine wines!

Report

The weather gods smiled on us at Whipsnade - a brilliant, sunny, but cool, day led to excellent golfing conditions.

I think we all enjoyed the course - it was in good condition but the greens were a little slow and took some time to adjust to some of the tricky breaks.

Just before teeing off, Alan made a passionate plea to have his handicap changed from 23 to 24 and in a weak moment, your secretary gave in ,,,,, needless to say, he romped home with a winning 36 points but had to leave early so could not collect the April Trophy - sorry, Alan  - cut two shots next time out!!

I'd have left early as well if that happened to me - Ed

A fantastic £230.00 ws raised for The British Heart Foundation - a great start and thanks to all who helped! Finesmaster Ivor Harris proved a formidable enforcement officer!

Report

The first outing of the season proved to be a success with 19 members (unfortunately, Tom could not join us but is on the way to a speedy recovery) enjoying dry but cold conditions.

The course was in good condition with very fast and tricky greens – this, however, did not prove to be a problem for our winner, Paul, who came away with a very credible 40 points, playing off a 3 handicap!

Unfortunately, our past captain, Jeff had to retire, hurt, after 9 holes and spent the next 2 hours in the clubhouse warming up and watching golf on the telly.

Dinner over, Ivor, our Fines Master for the night, squeezed over £230 from our merry bunch – this was supported by generously donations from Jack and Gerry who were unable to attend and is a great start to our Captain’s Charity, The British Heart Foundation. Well done!
