The Bedfordshire | November 9th
For our last golfing event of the year and subsequent AGM, 16 LEGS members took to the Bedfordshire course including another new guest, with the good news that trolleys were permitted so apart from buggies, all who wanted to play, could.
Considering the recent rains and close call for trolleys the course was in very good condition. Many remarked how the club has invested and improved since they last came. A times the stiff winds on the course made for challenging golf especially when playing straight into it.
The scoring was good and very close, so well done to all.
- The winner on 34 points was Clive Haywood, very well done indeed.
- Second was Tom Inskip with 33 points, well played.
- In third place was Pete Schofield with a score of 32.
- Nearest the pin was John Simpson, well done.
- Nearest the pin in 2 on the 3rd was Clive Haywood, again getting close with a super shot for the 2nd event in a row.
- Nearest the pin in 2 on the 11th was Pete Schofield.
- The wooden spoon goes to Mike Webb.
As 2 people won 2 prizes each, their second bottle of wine was generously donated to others.
After the game the meal was lovely, and the banter was lively. It was lovely to see Colin Bolster, Mike Stockford, Ian McLuskie and Richard Ebbs also join us for dinner. Mike delivered a very heart felt Grace before food, remembering others who are not as fortunate as us, this was warmly received, thank you Mike.
There was no Fines Master as this was our AGM event.
Our Treasurer reported the money raised from the day was £200 which goes towards all our charities. This is another fabulous amount.
Everyone had fun with our annual secret Santa, taking home a surprise gift.
The AGM rounded off the day, the minutes will be published in due course. The two annual trophies were presented by Captain Mike. The Calvados Cup going to Graham Shennan and Paul Jones and the Player of the Year was won by David Steel, very well deserved, David. If you would like to know how the Calvados Cup winners are selected, our Handicap and Scoring Secretary will be delighted to take you through it.
At the AGM a special presentation was made to outgoing Captain and LEGS co-founder member Mike Webb in recognition for his services to LEGS. Congratulations from all to Mike.
All in all, this was a splendid day, and a lovely way to round off our golfing year.
The schedule for 2024 has been published so just a quick reminder for your diaries the first event of 2024 is Wellingborough on Wednesday the 20th March, please sign up in the usual way on the website.
Pavenham Park | October 18th
18 LEGS members took to the Pavenham Park course hoping to miss the late afternoon forecast rain. No such luck, the rains arrived early, but thankfully they were reasonably light and didn’t last too long.
The course was in good condition and the greens were as challenging as ever with the slopes, bumps, and hollows taxing everyone.
The scoring was very good indeed, so well done to all.
- The winner on a handsome 40 points was Bernard Henry, very well done indeed.
- Second was Stephen Long with 39 points, well played.
- In third place was Tom Inskip with a super score of 36, well played.
- Nearest the pin was Mike Webb, the only person to make the green in one.
- Nearest the pin in 2 was Clive Haywood, getting within a couple of feet with a super shot.
- The wooden spoon goes to Mike Webb.
After the game the meal was lovely, and the banter was good.
Pete updated all on the sad news of Mike Stockford’s wife, Linda passing away earlier in October. All at LEGS gave Mike their best wishes. Funeral details will be sent directly to LEGS members as appropriate. We also wish Richard Sharpe a speedy recover from his fall and hope to see him on the course again soon.
Thank you, Chris Ellis, for being Fines Master for the first time and raising money for our charities.
Our Treasurer reported the money raised from the day was £252 which goes towards all our charities. This is another fabulous amount. He also reported that this year we have raised more than £3,000 towards our Captain’s charities, which is amazing. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
Colin updated all on the details for the 2024 2 day away event, which will be at the Nottinghamshire again, 24-25th September. The signup website link will be sent to everyone when ready. Please signup quickly if you want to go as it is very popular and there are a finite number of places.
All in all, this was a splendid day, thank you to you all for your fun and warm company.
Next up is our final golf game of the year at Bedfordshire on the 9th November with the AGM after lunch, please sign up in the usual way on the website. To help you plan your diaries bacon rolls will be at 9:00am with 1st tee at 10:04am, giving us lunch around 3:30-4:00pm.
I’m very pleased to report that an excellent couple of days were enjoyed by 16 LEGS members. We gathered at the venue just after a storm had passed through. While this created some delays and a few dodgy moments for some driving up the M1, fortunately we managed to get a full house of attendees.
Day 1 - The Championship Course
Given the volume of rain that preceded us, the course stood up very well. This may have been due to the number of lakes and streams scattered liberally around the very challenging 18 holes. With a slope rating of 139 from the back tees, we all expected a tough round and so it proved for most with a high number of golf balls finding a watery end. Less than half of us scored 30 points or more and the winners were;
- 1st John Simpson 34
- 2nd Andrew Stevenson 33
- Nearest the pin - Stephen Long
- Nearest in two - Pete Schofield
- The team prize was won by John, Andrew, Alan Horn & Bernard Henry. Their winning margin over the runners up was a mere 2 points with 120 beating 118.
Following a few post-round refreshments, we headed for our 2 course dinner with wine. After dinner, Martin Lavansch shared his musical talents with us once again. Martin's efforts raised £133 for this year's Captains Charities, including donations from the bar staff - even though they were a bit young to recall some of his songbook !
Day 2 - The Signature Course
The lower slope rating suggested a more straightforward golf course and this proved to be the case, even with just as many water hazards coming into play on most holes.
Our average score improved by more than 2 points, and the winners were;
- 1st Colin Oates 38
- 2nd Clive Haywood 34
- Nearest the pin – Alan Horn
- Nearest in two – Jeff Wood
- The team prize went to Martin, Colin, John & Richard Shortland. The winning margin was only 2 points again with 129 beating 127 into 2nd place.
My improvement by 7 points on day 2 led to me winning our 36 hole trophy with 69 points.
Our trip closed with the prizegiving of bottles of wine to the winners plus a special prize to Captain Mike. On hitting a very short tee shot on a very long hole, he consoled himself and his playing partners with the phrase “well, at least it’s gone beyond my bag!” Perhaps a lesson to us all?
Finally, my thanks go to our Director of Scoring, Andrew Stevenson. He did a superb job in securing the prizes, helping me with the draws and looking after the competitive side to our 2-day event. I should add that he finished day 2 with a birdie 4 at a par 5 (over water) that earned him 5 stableford points – yes, 5 on one hole!
The consensus of opinion was that we had played on 2 very nice challenging golf course teaming with wildlife; Canadian & Egyptian geese, mallards, herons, moorhens and even a fox that followed Andrew for a couple of holes while he ate his Mars bar !
So, a very enjoyable trip that was enhanced by suffering no rain during 2 rounds of golf – very unusual for a LEGS event !
All of us are looking forward to a similar trip next year - hopefully with more members, and their guests, able to join in the fun.
Kettering gave 14 intrepid LEGS golfers the toughest challenge this year, with monsoon rains and up to 40mph winds it was a testament to everyone’s character that all played well and could laugh about an incredible day. The course was in excellent condition. Many had not played Kettering before and agreed it is a good course and worth keeping on our calendar.
The scoring was very good in the extreme conditions, so a hearty well done to all.
- The winner on 36 points was Andrew Stevenson, very well done indeed.
- Second was Captain Mike Webb with 34 points, well played.
- In third place was Jeff Wood with another super score of 32, well played.
- Nearest the pin was Colin Oates, beating others to the prize.
- Nobody made the green for nearest the pin in 2.
- The wooden spoon goes to Jos Daalhuizen.
After the game the meal was lovely, and added to the groups feeling we should come to Kettering again. Thank you, Colin Oates, for being an excellent Fines Master and raising money for our charities. Our Treasurer reported the money raised from the day was £236 which goes towards all our charities. This is another fabulous amount. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
Colin updated all on the details for the up and coming 2 day away event at the Nottinghamshire 26-27th September. We look forward to seeing you if you are coming to that.
All in all, this was a splendid day in the most testing of conditions on the golf course, thank you to you all for your fun and warm company.
Next up is Pavenham Park on Wednesday the 18th October, please sign up in the usual way on the website.
Knebworth | August 24th
Knebworth was our latest venue and what a super setting for the day it was too.
The weather was fine and very warm with little or no wind. The course was in excellent condition with the greens especially good and playing like snooker tables, albeit with plenty of slopes!
With another amazing turn out of LEGS members 25 players, including 3 guests took to the course, this is the biggest number I have seen. With George Clarke also joining us for dinner the atmosphere afterwards was buzzing and a lot of fun.
The scoring was extremely high reflecting some excellent golf from many.
- The winner on a terrific 42 points was David Steel, for the second event in a row very well done indeed. David is in a rich vein of form.
**in case you didn't know, David got a 2 for 5**
- Second was Tom Inskip on 41 points, the new clubs are clearly bedding in well.
- In third place was Stephen Long with another super score of 40 points, well played.
- Nearest the pin was Pete Schofield with the only shot to make it.
- Nearest the pin in 2 was Jeff Wood, also with the only shot to make it, very well done.
- With 3 guests we had a hotly contested prize, the winner being Eric Lavansch with a well deserved 40 points.
- The wooden spoon goes to Peter Sayers, for the very first time.
After the game the meal was lovely, as it always is at Knebworth and overall, we enjoyed plentiful banter.
Thank you, Andy Pohler, for being a very good Fines Master and raising a sizeable sum for our charities.
Secretary Pete passed on the news from Mike Stockford and his wife Linda regarding their health. Everyone at LEGS wishes you both the very best, Mike.
Extra money was raised thanks to your generosity by auctioning a bottle of Chianti courtesy of Capt Mike and Bob. Thank you, Alan, for buying it!
Our Treasurer reported the money raised from the day which was a whopping £320 which goes towards all our charities. This is another fabulous amount. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
All in all, this was a splendid day at one of our favourite venues.
Next up is Kettering on Wednesday the 20th September, please sign up in the usual way on the website.
Captain's Day, Bedford & County | July 20th
Bedford & County was the venue for our LEGS Captain’s Day, and a super day it was too.
The weather was fine and warm with little or no wind. The course was in great condition with fairways and greens well looked after and playing true.
What an amazing turn out of LEGS members, with 20 players, including 3 guests and 22 for dinner, this must be the most we have had for many a year.
We had extra fun with 2 Mulligans available to reload a poor tee shot and a 5ft Mulligan string to get out of a sticky fairway position. Everyone wanted these and most people used at least one of their Mulligans! Thank you, Andrew Stevenson, for preparing the tokens and string. Mike’s trousers also added fun although sunglasses were required to protect the eyes.
The scoring was very high reflecting some excellent golf from many.
- The winner on a terrific 41 points was David Steel, very well done indeed.
- Second was Pete Schofield on 39 points.
- In third place was Ron Knox with a super score of 37 points, great to see you playing so well, Ron.
- Nearest the pin was Andrew Stevenson, our resident NP expert! Well done.
- Nearest the pin in 2 was Andy Pohler, very well done.
- With 3 guests we had a hotly contested prize, the winner being Bill Riding, well deserved with 37 points.
- The wooden spoon goes to Chris Ellis.
After the game the meal was lovely, and it was great to sit outside for the food, prizes, and overall plentiful banter. Thank you, Martin Lavansch, for being a very entertaining Fines Master and raising a sizeable sum for our charities.
We thanked Captain Mike for delivering a lovely tribute to the recently passed Mike Lennox.
Extra money was raised thanks to your generosity by auctioning a half bottle of Wimbledon champagne (thank you Richard Ebbs) and approximately 120 golf balls collected by Andy Pohler.
Our Treasurer reported the money raised from the day which was a staggering £565.00 which goes towards all our charities. This is the second highest amount raised at any LEGS match. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
All in all, this was a splendid Captain’s Day and one of our best LEGS events.
.
Mid Herts | June 15th
A very hot and sunny day greeted us at Mid Herts. Plenty of hats, sun cream and water aided us through the day.
The course was challenging with dry and brown fairways and very good greens.
With 16 LEGS members taking to course we had a very good turnout, 5 people choosing buggies which was possibly the smart move as this gave extra shade!
The club were excellent yet again, accommodating our many late changes without fuss and indeed without any financial charges to us, we thanked the Mid Herts team on behalf of all of us.
The scoring was good, and all our shots seemed to go that little bit further on the dry ground.
The match results are:
- Winner Henry Richardson with 38 points, going from zero to hero in back-to-back events having won the wooden spoon at St Neots last month. Well played Henry.
- Runner up was Tom Inskip with 36 points, well done Tom, the new irons are clearly working well.
- Third was Pete Schofield just beating Chris Ellis on triple count back on 33 points.
- Nobody at all hit the green for the nearest the pin.
- Nearest the pin in 2 was Andrew Stevenson, beating 2 others in a hotly contested prize.
- Wooden spoon was also Andrew Stevenson, securing a 2nd honour which is ok as only one comes with a bottle of wine prize.
Our treasurer reported on finances raised on the day which at £247 is an excellent amount. Thank you all for your generosity.
Next event is Captain’s Day at Bedford & County on Thursday 20th July, sign up here on the website as usual, looking forward to seeing you there.
St Neots | May 25th
We enjoyed a clear sometimes sunny day with cool winds.
St Neots was in very good condition. As usual, the mostly tree lined fairways did not allow any wayward tee shots being greeted with enthusiasm. The greens were well prepared but very slow as our fines master found, on more than one occasion. We all suffered at his hand after the meal as a result.
St Neots were most accommodating during the arrangements for the day as our number able to play changed. They always offer a warm welcome.
Captain Mike gave us an update on a few members not enjoying full health at the moment. Those attending, agreed unanimously that BDHRA should be given funds requested to cover their wish list. The items will all help to ensure those using the charity can fully benefit from the experience.
The prize giving showed that both the wooden spoon and winner were hotly contested and decided on countback. Well played to everyone.
- Wooden spoon – Henry Richardson – 2 shots back
- Nearest the pin – Colin Oates
- Nearest the pin in two – Bernard Henry
- Third prize with 31 points – Stephen Long
- Second prize with 33 points – Andrew Stevenson – 2 shot reduction
- Winner – Mike Webb – 2 shot reduction
Monies raised was £200 overall. Thanks to everyone.
Captain Mike reminded us of the date for the next meeting at Mid Herts – Thursday 15th June -and looks forward to seeing us there.
Verulam Report
Verulam gave us a cool weather start, turning into warm sunshine through the day.
The course was in splendid condition with tees, fairways, and greens all very good. The greens were very fast and undulating giving some us plenty of putting practice
12 LEGS members took on the course. We saw some amazing scoring with a record breaking 44 points winning the day, well done Jeff Wood. Even the wooden spoon score (by your Secretary) was 25.
We missed Ray Beckman and Peter Sayers on the course as buggies had not yet been permitted, however it was lovely to see both at dinner. We achieved perhaps another LEGS first by having more members socialising and at dinner afterwards than on the golf course.
The club treated us very well, being flexible and efficient as our numbers changed right up to the event day and they moved the dinner time around for us to accommodate group finishing times. The steak and ale pie was very good.
Captain Mike gave an update on our charities and a lively discussion agreed to donate £870 to various causes, thank you everyone for your generosity.
The match results are:
- Winner Jeff Wood with 44 points, well played Jeff.
- Runner up Clive Haywood with 40 points, usually enough to win, well done Clive.
- Third was Chris Ellis but as he won nearest the pin in 2 this honour goes to Stephen Long with 32 points, well played both
- Nearest the pin David Steel.
- Nearest the pin in 2 Chris Ellis.
- Wooden spoon Pete Schofield.
Our treasurer reported on finances raised on the day which at £200 is excellent for a smaller number of members attending.
- 11:00am | Stephen Long, Jeff Wood, Clive Haywood
- 11:08am | Andrew Stevenson, Jos Daalhuizen, David Steel, Pete Schofield
- 11:16am | Bernhard Henry, Chris Ellis, Graham Shennan, Tom Inskip
- 11:24am | Ray Beckman, Peter Sayers, Mike Webb, Paul Jones
Wellingborough Report
We were blessed with lovely sunny and mild weather with a firm breeze at times. The course opened their trolley restrictions in perfect timing for us on the morning of our event, helping out members who otherwise might have found it tiring.
16 LEGS members took on the course, which was in very good condition, it was soft so played quite long, the greens were true. There was some excellent scoring with 37 points winning the day, well done David Steel.
The club treated us very well, being flexible and efficient as our numbers changed right up to the event day and they moved the dinner time around for us to accommodate group finishing times. The chicken, ham and leak pie was excellent.
We welcomed new member Jos Daalhuizen and guest Tim Taylor, both said they had an enjoyable day in our company.

Ten Pin Bowling evening 23rd February 2023
A lovely time was had by all, ten pin bowling in St Neots with 9 LEGS members all with their partners giving a lively group of 18.
Everyone played 3 games and we mixed ourselves up after each game so we got to mingle.
There was some impressive bowling on display from many people, to mention just two, Tom and David posting impressive scores – a misspent youth perhaps? Many of the ladies showed honed techniques and were not to be outdone by the men. Some even using their unfamiliar left hand to great effect.
The St Neots Eat N Bowl venue looked after us very nicely. Setting up all our games on the big screens each time we mixed ourselves up for the next game seamlessly. Our food was delivered bang on time while we bowled which kept us flowing along.
The venue seemed to suit us well, many members have given good feedback. All of us being in neighbouring lanes increased the banter opportunities.
Thank you to everyone and their partners for making it a fun evening, many agreed it was nice to meet up before the golf gets started and do something a bit different again.
Next up is our first golf event at Wellingborough on 22nd March 2023.
